Glühwein (Mulled Spiced Red Wine)

Pronounced "glue-vine", this is a staple throughout the German-speaking countries. At the famous Christmas markets, you will find tons of Glühwein stalls serving this up by the glass full. While you can buy it already made, it is super easy to make your own, or to "personalize" the store-bought bottle.

Glühwein (Mulled Spiced Red Wine)

Directions

  1. Stud the lemon slices with the cloves (push them in enough so they won't float away).
  2. Pour the wine into a pot and start to heat on a medium heat. If you are using a store-bought bottle, do a 1:1 split between red wine and the store-bought one.
  3. Add the spices and bring to barely a boil. Do not let it boil.
  4. Steep for about 30 minutes.
  5. Serve warm.

Planning ahead: Create the Glühwein a few days ahead. Once steeped, let it chill, then bottle and let it set for a few days for things to "spice" further. When ready to serve, slowly reheat to serving temperature.
